Coverage & Frequency Info

It's important to note that the products we offer do not support international roaming (i.e. our products can only function within Japan).

For details of the networks we use in Japan and the frequencies supported by our current product range, please refer to the relevant guide below -

Voice+Data SIM Cards

Our physical Voice+Data SIM Card products utilize the Softbank network.

The primary 4G frequency used by this network is:

4G Band 1 – 2100MHz

It’s vital that your device supports this frequency as this will provide network coverage in most major locations. We would therefore recommend using a device that supports this frequency at the very least.

However, this network also supports the following additional frequencies:

4G Band 3 – 1800MHz
4G Band 8 – 900MHz

The “4G Band 3 – 1800MHz” frequency is also commonly used in major areas (such as Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka) and the “4G Band 8 – 900MHz” frequency can offer improved network coverage in mountainous regions / inside buildings etc.

For the best possible network coverage, we would recommend using a device that supports the primary frequency we first mentioned (the “4G Band 1 – 2100MHz” frequency) in addition to as many of the other frequencies shown above as possible.

Our Voice+Data eSIM products utilize the Docomo network.

The primary 3G/4G frequencies this network currently uses within Japan are as follows:

3G Band 1 – 2100MHz
4G Band 1 – 2100MHz

We would therefore recommend using a device that supports these 3G and 4G frequencies at minimum.

However, this network also supports the following additional frequencies:

3G Band 6 – 800MHz
3G Band 19 – 800MHz
4G Band 3 – 1800MHz
4G Band 19 – 800MHz
4G Band 21 – 1500MHz

The 3G Band 6 frequency and the 3G/4G Band 19 frequencies can offer improved network coverage in mountainous regions / inside buildings etc.

If your device supports the 4G Band 21 frequency (in addition to the 4G Band 3 frequency), you may also receive improved cellular data coverage in some cities.

For the best possible coverage, we would recommend using a device that supports the primary frequencies we first mentioned (the 3G and 4G Band 1 – 2100MHz frequency) in addition to as many of the other frequencies shown above as possible.

Important Note:

On March 31st 2026, the Docomo network intends to shutdown their 3G service. After the shutdown, this eSIM product will only allow access to the 4G / LTE network and calls will only be possible via VoLTE. In preparation for this change, it would be best to choose a 4G compatible device (that supports the 4G frequencies mentioned above) and to choose a device that supports the VoLTE calling feature.
