Compatibility Checks

Modified on Tue, 27 Oct at 4:18 PM

To avoid any issues, it’s important to ensure that your device meets our compatibility requirements.

The compatibility requirements can vary depending on the product type and so please refer to the relevant product guide below -

Voice SIM Cards

(Product Code "SP30", "SP142" or "SP135" / "SP136" within your account)

(Call / SMS services with various data plans to choose from)

There have been different versions of this product type over the years.

The latest version can provide you with 5G coverage in Japan (in addition to 4G LTE coverage) and it also offers a roaming feature as an optional extra.

If you have already purchased a SIM card and you are unsure which version you are using, please login to your Mobal account (MyAccount) and check the "Product Code".

Voice SIM Card (Latest Version)
- Product released on July 21st 2026
- Will display the product code "SP30" in your account
- Can choose "Voice Only" plan or data inclusive plan

General Compatibility Requirements:

  • The phone must be fully unlocked to accept SIM cards from alternative service providers. If you are not sure if your device is unlocked, please check this with your previous service provider / the original retailer you purchased the device from.

  • To access the Docomo 4G/5G network within Japan, your phone must also support the required 4G/5G frequency bands. For additional information, please visit the following link: Frequency Guide

  • In order to use the calling feature, your device must also be VoLTE capable (the Docomo network no longer offers 3G network coverage and so calls are placed via VoLTE).

Roaming Compatibility Issues:

Please note that this product type (i.e. the latest 5G capable Voice SIM/eSIM service) is the only product that supports international roaming as an optional extra.

Enabling this option (as explained here) should allow you to place/receive calls or send/receive SMS messages while outside of Japan (cellular data access will not be available outside of Japan regardless of the selected plan).

Unfortunately however, we have found that some devices are just not compatible with the roaming services provided by the Docomo network outside of Japan.

The cause of this issue has not yet been confirmed (and does not appear to impact services within Japan) but based on customer reports, this issue primarily appears to affect:

  • Samsung handsets from the "Galaxy S" and the "Galaxy A" range
(mainly US, Australian, Taiwan, Hong Kong Singapore versions and some international versions)

  • iPhone handsets such as the "16e", "17e", "Air" and the "18 Pro" primarily

  • Affected devices are usually unable to connect to the network or the device appears to connect but outbound / incoming calls fail to complete (and in some cases SMS messaging also fails)

Results may vary depending on the location / the handset version and please be advised that we have not had the opportunity to test all handsets or locations (so there may be incompatible devices or affected countries that are not yet included in the list above).

If you are experiencing any issues while roaming outside of Japan, we offer troubleshooting instructions here but if the issue persists after completing these steps (especially if your device is included in the list above), we may not be able to offer a solution.

Compatibility issues that arise between specific devices and the network are usually out of our control (and so we would advise against using one of the devices above outside of Japan) but if you require further assistance / more information, you could also consider contacting the relevant support team (such as the Apple or Samsung Support team for example).

Voice SIM Card (Previous Versions)
- SIM Cards purchased before July 21st 2026

- Will display the product code "SP142" or "SP135" / "SP136" in your account

For compatibility with this product type, please ensure that your phone meets the requirements below -

  • The phone must be fully unlocked to accept SIM cards from alternative service providers. If you are not sure if your device is unlocked, you may wish to check this with your previous service provider / the original retailer you purchased the device from.

  • At minimum, the phone must support the 4G Band 1 - 2100MHz frequency. For the best possible coverage we would recommend using a handset that also supports 4G Bands 3 and 8 as mentioned here: Frequency Guide

  • Have at least Android OS 12 installed (when using an Android device).

  • If you're using the oldest version of this service (product code "SP135" or "SP136") which was available as an Android or iPhone version, it will only be fully compatible with the relevant handset type.

  • The Softbank network no longer offers 3G network coverage and so a VoLTE compatible phone is required. However, we have found that some VoLTE capable handsets are not compatible with the VoLTE service provided by the Softbank network. For a list of devices we have found to be incompatible please refer to the "Incompatible Phone List" in the drop-down section below.

  • You can also review a list of handsets that Softbank has tested here (you may need to translate this page through a browser such as Chrome) to check if they advise the handset is compatible for calls, texts and data. This link is not directly related to our service (as this list is for devices and SIM cards purchased directly from Softbank) but this can be used as a general guide when deciding on a phone (in addition to checking the handset meets all other requirements mentioned above).

Voice eSIMs

(Product Code "ES30" or "ES8" within your account)

(Call / SMS services with various data plans to choose from)

There have been two different versions of the Voice eSIM product.

The latest version can provide you with 5G coverage in Japan (in addition to 4G LTE coverage) and it also offers a roaming feature as an optional extra.

If you have already purchased an eSIM and are unsure which version you are using, please login to your Mobal account (MyAccount) and check the "Product Code".

Voice eSIM (Latest Version)
- Product released on March 18th 2026
- Will display the product code "ES30" in your account

General Compatibility Requirements:

  • Your smart phone handset must be eSIM compatible and you can check this on most devices by dialing: *#06#

If a 32 digit "EID" number is displayed on the next screen, this would indicate that your handset is suitable for use. Alternatively, you may be able to locate the EID by going to Settings > General > About > EID (on most iPhone handsets) or by going to Settings > About Phone > Status Information > EID (on most Android handsets).

However, please be advised that your handset must be an actual eSIM compatible device with built-in eSIM functionality. For example, our eSIMs are not compatible with eSIM adapter products (such as “esim.me”) that allow you to install eSIMs on phones that were not originally eSIM compatible.

Please also note that this eSIM service is only compatible with devices linked to an EID that starts with the following numbers -

    89033023....
    89033024....
    89043051....
    89043052....
    89049032....

If your EID starts with a different number, it will not be suitable for use with our "Voice+Data eSIM" service.

  • The phone must be fully unlocked to accept eSIMs from alternative service providers. If you are not sure if your device is unlocked, you may wish to check this with your previous service provider / the original retailer you purchased the device from.

  • To access the Docomo 4G/5G network, your phone must also support the required 4G/5G frequency bands. For additional information, please visit the following link: Frequency Guide

  • In order to use the calling feature, your device must also be VoLTE capable (as the Docomo network no longer offers 3G network coverage and so calls are placed via VoLTE).

Roaming Compatibility Issues:

Please note that this product type (i.e. the latest 5G capable Voice SIM/eSIM service) is the only product that supports international roaming as an optional extra.

Enabling this option (as explained here) should allow you to place/receive calls or send/receive SMS messages while outside of Japan (cellular data access will not be available outside of Japan).
